The Frozen Lyons

Last summer, the Soybean Review followed the Iowa Soybean Association’s Environmental Programs & Services Team out in the field to test water quality in Brushy Creek. Nine months later, we met up with E-Team staffer Dan Dreher to test water in Lyons Creek and see how gathering water samples varies between the winter and summer months.

The biggest difference? Don't forget to bring an axe.

Lyons Creek is an 11,073 acre watershed located in Hamilton County, Iowa. The creek is part of the Boone River watershed and has a pending TMDL due to an unknown biological impairment. Water monitoring is being carried out to better identify impairment sources among agricultural and non-agricultural sources. The test results will be used as the basis for watershed planning and outreach efforts.

There was around 6 inches of snow on the ground, with some areas as deep as our hips. Below is a short slideshow detailing the afternoon.
